Of the top European football clubs, Chelsea FC is the most followed by Nigerians on Facebook.
According to statistics available on socialbakers.com,
a Czech-based company that provides social media network statistics and
analysis, Chelsea FC has about 634, 672 Nigerian Facebook fans, who
keep up with its activities as well as engage the club and other
supporters.
The figure represents about 3.5 per cent
of its total fan base of over 17 million people on the social network.
Also, Nigerians are the highest followers of Chelsea FC in Africa on
Facebook, beating the club’s supporters in Egypt, Algeria, Ghana and
Morocco to second, third, fourth and fifth positions respectively.
Indonesians are the highest number of
people following the football club on the social network in the world,
with over 2, 302, 994 fans representing 12.9 per cent of its total
Facebook fans.
In second place is the 2012/2013 English
Premier League winner, Manchester United, as it has about 615, 454
Nigerians subscribing to its updates on social network.
The figure accounts for 1.8 per cent of
the Facebook followership of the football club based in Old Trafford,
Greater Manchester.
Although London-based Arsenal FC has a
total following of 14, 366, 883 people, only 504, 090 Nigerians are
friends with it on Facebook.
In Africa, Egyptians are the biggest fans of the coach Arsène Wenger-managed club.
Spanish Giant, Barcelona FC, also has a
sizable number of loyal fans in Nigeria. The Facebook page which is
updated in Spanish and English boasts a following of over 43 million
people on Facebook. However, only 328, 564 Nigerians have taken interest
in their activities on the social networking site. Again, the biggest
supporters of this club on the Facebook are Indonesians, Mexicans and
Americans with four, three and two million fo0
llowers respectively.
Egyptians seem to love FC Barcelona, as
the survey showed that over 1.25million citizens of the North African
nation follow the club’s activities on Facebook. Residents of Morocco,
Algeria and Tunisia also account for a substantial proportion of the
clubs fan base in Africa.
On the 45-nation list of countries
following Real Madrid Football Club of Spain, Nigeria occupies the 35th
spot. Of the 39 million admirers that the club has on Facebook globally,
only 267, 441 are Nigerians, representing less than one per cent of
Real Madrids’ fan base.
Going by the statistics, Real Madrid
commands a bigger Facebook following from citizens of Iraq, Jordan,
Iran, Romania and Vietnam, than Nigeria.
Liverpool FC of England, whose local
fans in Nigeria readily chant the club’s anthem, “You’ll Never Walk
Alone” whenever their matches are been aired, has just 166, 343 Facebook
fans who are Nigerians. The survey also reveals that over 28.7 per cent
of Liverpool FC fan base on Facebook are Asians.
Italian giant, AC Milan, which is
arguably the most successful club in world football in terms of
international trophies, has only 59,217 Nigerians subscribing to its
‘’behind-the-scenes’’ updates on Facebook.
In fact, Nigeria occupies the last position on the 45-nation list of countries following the club on the social network.
But AC Milan’s Facebook fans in Nigeria
are more compared to that of Manchester City FC. MCFC has just 34,032
followers in the country.
The Lilywhites-Tottenham Hotspurs —
known for its long-standing rivalry with neighbouring Arsenal — has the
least fan base in the country with just 13,473 Nigerians following the
club on Facebook.
Meanwhile, Real Madrids’
forward, Christiano Ronaldo, is the footballer with the highest number
of followers on Facebook. He has to his credit over 59 million fans on
the social network. He is closely followed by reigning world best
footballer, Lionnel Messi, with 47 million followers. Messi’s team mate,
Andres Iniesta, comes third with 13 million people followers on
