The Committee for the Defence of Human Rights has condemned the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company for what it called exorbitant tariffs and poor service delivery.
Speaking in a press conference which took place on Friday in Lagos State, the state’s Assistant Secretary and Coordinator of the group, Omidiji Adebayo, expressed his displeasure with the company calling it “voodist in power sector”.
The press conference, which took place in line with the annual programme of the rights group, was tagged ‘A call against fraud, impunity and epileptic service delivery’.
Adebayo described the IKEDC as inconsistent and disorganised, noting that they in the Ipaja Business Unit could not continue to pay for power they had not used. He added that they were being made to pay for poles and transformers.
He said, “CDHR Ekoro Unit wishes to express utmost disappointment in IKEDC having considered their options of maximizing profit fraudulently through the issuance of fake recharge cards and E-Tranzact payment transaction.
“It is however disheartening that the electricity consumers have suffered so much in the hand of IKEDC who portrayed high level of impunity by disregarding the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission directory as stipulated in The Punch publication dated 3rd Rather than abide by the NERC directive to make electricity available at a reasonable price, the IKEDC was making them pay excessively for power.
“It is no more news that communities could be in absolute darkness for months yet this so called mischievous power service providers would still dispatch bills to innocent poor masses.”
Should the IKEDC fail to heed to their demands to restore power with reasonable bills, the human right activist warned that they would begin preparation for mass action.
He also added that they had filed a pre-action notice and would take legal action against the IKEDC if their demands were not met.
