LFDW-Awards-2013-Call-for-Entry-620x878
Lagos Fashion and Design Week (LFDW) is accepting applications for the Young Creative Entrepreneur (YCE) & Young Designer (YD) of the year awards 2013. The YCE awards programme is unique in that it rewards the talent and initiative of young creative entrepreneurs from across the creative fashion industry recognizing the central role they play in the development of a competitive and sustainable creative economy.

One of the key objectives of the YCE programme is to sensitise the UK creative sector to the opportunities that come from working with other creative entrepreneurs in emerging economies. A second objective is to better understand the dynamics of being an entrepreneur in the creative economy.

British Council and LFDW have identified the need to identify such talents and provide them with the right networking abilities to further expose their business to the much needed prominence and simultaneously grow the Nigerian fashion industry.
The winner of the Fashion award will be invited to take part in a tour of the industry in the UK. We anticipate that this tour will take place in September 2013

With the young designer of the year award, LFDW offers young fashion designers the opportunity to be participants at targeted seminars and workshops facilitated by British Council and a chance to exhibit their collection in front of a select audience at the Lagos Fashion and Design Week. At LFDW, our aim is to promote and nurture the talents of today’s young, creative innovators, so that tomorrow’s creative industries can continue to play a major role in the economy of Nigeria and the rest of the world; and to provide young talents with a platform for their ideas and designs.

Eva Alordiah VS Linda Ikeji

This is exactly how Linda Posted it:

“Eva Alodiah in a radio interview with Hotfm Abuja Breakfast show with Cheezy Charles and Tutu, confessed she’s a victim of child molestation when responding to question on why she hasn’t spoken publicly about the #ChildNotbride issue.

Eva said:
‘We are such a country that is so blessed by God. We don’t have earthquake, volcanoes, tsunami. We are problems to ourselves and this is disgusting. I come from a background where I was molested as a child. Definitely it’s a serious situation where you have to put a child through that type of trauma’.
She even added a link for those that wanted to listen.
I didn’t Listen sha…too long thing.
Now, This is Eva’s response to what Linda Ikeji reported

Eva_Alordiah__Linda_Ikeji__blogger1
Well I’m not here to broker peace or put fire on top of this matter.
All I simply have to say is that.
Sometimes, these experiences help others connect more easily, I mean people out there that have been sexually abused at a point in their life.
Being able to relate to someone popular on such issues, actually help people to grapple with whatever emotional trauma it is that they are going through, and let them know that even though they are not bold enough to say it out loud, someone else has done it, and for that they feel represented.

Linda has never minced words on being a gossip blogger and that's one thing i like about her…
errrrrmmm well due to all the vexing, Eva sha used style to put out her blog out there sha, way to go girl *winks, there’s nothing like bad press! Lol... And for those that are wondering what her blogsite address is, it is www.evaalordiah.blogspot.com

2shotz's response to Beverly Osu over alledged battering

Beverly Osu, who we will all agree kinda talks too much in the BBA House, claimed a few days back that she was battered to the extreme by an ex-rapper boyfriend and even pulled up her shirt to show a scar she got from one of his numerous beatings...to prove she wasn't lying about the abuse. (Women usually don't lie about being abused. If anything, they try to hide it).

She said one time while he was beating her she ran into the bathroom to escape him, but instead of leaving her alone, he broke down the bathroom door and continued beating her.

Beverly didn't mention names...she said "rapper boyfriend"...and some of us know she once dated 2shotz who is a rapper. She may have been referring to 2shotz or another rapper she dated...

But later on, 2shotz responded to the allegations. Find the statement he posted on Facebook after the cut...

I'm Not A Child - Osita Iheme

Here's what Osita said in a recent interview about how he feels when people treat him like he's a kid:

If you are a child in a drama, in real life you are not a child. You don’t need to behave like a child.

Yes, a lot of people mistake me for a child in real life, but that is their problem. I am not a child. I don’t think I look like a child. I don’t allow that to bother me because I am not seeing it.

People can see me and take me as a child, but that person is not with his senses because from the way I dress, the way I look, I don’t think I am looking like a child.

People can meet me at first and have a spontaneous reaction of seeing a child but when they sit down and look very well, they would understand that I am not a child.

Fed Cup: Enyimba advance to semis

Dami Paul

Enyimba have qualified for the semi-finals of the Federation Cup after beating Nasarawa United 1-0 in one of the quarter-finals at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta on Wednesday.
The lone goal, scored by Bobby Kingsley in the 48th minute, brought alive an otherwise dull game from both sides as the fans began to shout for more.
Enyimba coach, Imama Amakapabo, said the Aba team suffered from fatigue after being on the road for too long.
“It was a satisfactory game because we were expecting our opponents to be tough. We clashed recently in a league game and we knew the challenge they gave us then,” Amakapabo said after the game.
“What you see today (Wednesday) is not a bad performance from the players because they’ve been on the road for awhile and this has resulted in fatigue. We will leave here again to play another league game this weekend.”
Nasarawa United goalkeeper, Dami Paul, admitted their opponents deserved to be winners of the encounter, saying the missed chances from his teammates could have made the difference.
“Enyimba have quality players, and they played with determination. We were not bad too but we lost several opportunities to change the game,” Paul said.

Looks like Kim Kardashian wasn't lying about a photog trespassing onto Kardashian family territory this week --TMZ reports ... 1 cop car rolled up to their Calabasas mansion Wednesday ... and we're told police were nosing around about the incident.

As we reported, on Monday Kim posted video online, showing her mother Kris Jenner racing into her backyard in hot pursuit of a paparazzo who had trespassed on her grounds.

It smelled like BS at the time -- after all, why would Kris put herself in that kind of danger???  But sources close to the Kardashians say police already have a solid lead on a suspect, and dropped by Kris' house to speak with her about the incident.

ACF, Tinubu, others hail APC registration

Buhari, Tinubu and Onu

The Independent National Electoral Commission on Wednesday last week approved the registration of the All Progressives Congress, thereby putting an end to the series of  political horse-trading over the ownership of  the acronym, APC.
A terse statement issued in Abuja by Mr. Kayode Idowu, the Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, said with the approval,  the  Action Congress of Nigeria, All Nigeria Peoples Party and the Congress for Progressive Change which formed the APC,    had  satisfied the requirements for registration.
INEC  also approved the withdrawal of the individual certificates of the   three parties   and   issued   a single certificate to APC.
The statement reads: “The Independent National Electoral Commission   has approved the application by three political parties – the  ACN, the  ANPP  and the   CPC  – to merge into one, to be known as the All Progressives Congress.
“On considering the application, the commission found that the applicant-parties have met all statutory requirements for the merger, and has accordingly granted their request.
“Consequently, the commission has approved the withdrawal of the individual certificates of the applicant-parties, and the issuance of a single certificate to the APC.”
The registration drew immediate reactions  from the APC, the Peoples Democratic Party, Arewa Consultative Forum,  a former Lagos State Governor, Bola Tinubu, and  the presidential candidate of the former ACN in the 2011 presidential election,Mallam Nuhu Ribadu.
While the APC described  the development as victory for Nigerians, the PDP said it would not lose sleep over it.
The  APC, in a statement   by its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said with its registration,  Nigerians now had an alternative to  the  ruling  PDP,   which it said had  taken  them “ for a bad ride in the past 14 years.”
It  added that its  registration   would  propel  the country to the league of top democratic nations with two major political parties.
The statement reads, “The journey has been long and tortuous. All sorts of obstacles were thrown onto  our path by anti-democratic forces, but we were painstaking, determined and unrelenting in our quest for a formidable platform that will allow our country, Nigeria, to achieve her full potential and join the league of respectable nations.
“With the approval of our merger by  the INEC and the emergence of the  APC, today (Wednesday) marks the beginning of a new dawn for our country and her long-suffering people. We thank Nigerians both here and in the Diaspora for standing by us.
“We thank the media for their fairness and we commend  the INEC for doing the right thing and for not succumbing to pressure from phantom political associations that sought to force it to circumvent the law.
“We promise not to disappoint Nigerians who have reposed much confidence in us. We say that contrary to the lies being peddled by the naysayers, we are not seeking political power for the sake of getting it, but in order to use it to empower our people and allow their long-nursed hopes and dreams to become a reality.
“And to those who have vowed to change their names if APC survives for a year, we hope they will live up to their words.’’
The party promised to unveil, in the days ahead, its membership registration plans to give all Nigerians, especially those disenchanted with the way things were  going on in the country, the much-awaited opportunity to be a part of the country’s democratic process in the true sense of the word.
‘’We will also be unveiling our plans to turn today’s hopelessness into a time of great opportunities, to reverse the downward slide in our socio-economic development, and to ensure that every Nigerian benefits from the commonwealth, instead of the present situation in which a few fat cats are milking the system dry at the expense of the citizenry,’’ it said.
One of the  founders of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, said the registration by INEC signalled  “the commencement of a new phase in the struggle to bring true democratic change to Nigeria.”
Describing the coming together of the ACN, CPC and ANPP as not just a merger, he said  “this is    the first   ever merger in the history of Nigeria and it represents a paradigm shift in our  politics.”
Tinubu, who congratulated the ACN, CPC and ANPP governors as well as  other leaders of the APC for making the registration possible, however,  challenged all progressive politicians    to “ rise up to answer the call of history to liberate our people.”
He also  hailed  “millions of Nigerians who stood by us during the long process to form the  APC,”  and the leadership of INEC “for this positive pronouncement.”
“Nigerians must give INEC a pat on the back for complying with the law of the land. What INEC has done is to follow the constitution and the electoral act to the letter. We hope INEC will continue in this spirit of independence and respect for the rule of law in all its future operations, “ Tinubu said in a statement by his media aide, Sunday Dare.
A co-founder   of the  APC and the presidential candidate  for the CPC  in the last presidential poll , Maj-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, said he would not react now on the registration  because  the National Chairman of the  new party, Chief Bisi Akande,  had yet to brief him.
“ The general cannot react to the registration now because he is yet to be briefed by our  national chairman , Chief  Akande. So until  the general hears from the national hierarchy of the party, he will not comment on the registration of the party. He will talk to the press as soon as he is well informed from the national level,” said  Buhari’s  spokesman, Yau Darazo.
Ribadu also welcomed the registration   and charged members of the APC to strive hard  for the ultimate goal of dislodging the PDP.
In  a statement in Abuja, he congratulated key players in the ACN, CPC and ANPP  “for  setting  their personal interests aside  in order to allow for  the mutation of a pan-Nigerian party that can provide a credible alternative to the ruling party”.
The statement by his  media aide, Abdulaziz Abdulaziz,  quoted him as  saying, “Like millions of Nigerians from all over the country, I am immensely delighted over the successful registration of the All Progressives Congress by INEC.”
According to him, the registration of the party by the electoral body “is not the end but the beginning of the end of misrule and cluelessness” by the PDP.
The  former CPC also threw its weight behind the INEC  decision, saying it had  given Nigerians a choice between “good and evil.”
“Today(Wednesday) Nigerians now have a choice between good and evil. Now that the APC has been registered, genuine choice has been put before Nigerians. For the very first time, Nigeria and Nigerians have now been put at the driver’s seat of their destiny, it said through its  ex-National Publicity Secretary, Rotimi Fashakin.
On its part, the ACF  said  the registration of  APC  would enhance the growth of democracy in the country.
Its National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Anthony Sani,   told one   of our correspondents that   any democracy without a viable opposition was as good as a fraud.
“The registration of  the APC as a political party is a healthy development needed for the growth of democracy, especially when regard is paid to the fact that any democracy without a viable alternative platform is a sham,” it said.
However, the PDP which   also welcomed the  registration,    said the APC    was  not a threat  to its dominance of the nation’s political scene.
“The registration of the new party poses no threat to the PDP. The ruling party still maintains its preeminent position and enjoys the widest popularity and acceptance among Nigerians across the country,”  its Acting National Publicity Secretary,  Mr. Tony Okeke, said  in a statement.
The PDP added, “With the registration of the APC, Nigerians now expect the leaders of the opposition party to eschew all forms of bitterness and desperation and desist from politics of propaganda which characterised their former parties.”
According to the PDP, Nigerians would like to see a  “vibrant opposition” that   would be constructively engaged in  issues of governance   instead of overheating the polity.
One of the groups that almost thwarted APC’s registration, the  African People’s Congress   held an emergency  meeting, barely 30 minutes after  INEC  issued its statement approving the new party.
The  African People’s Congress  which will on Thursday (today) issue  a statement on the APC registration,  may have  assembled  a  legal team to fine-tune the suit it filed at a Federal High Court, Abuja challenging  its non-registration by INEC.
“We are aware of INEC’s decision. We are currently meeting on it.  We will come out with a press statement tomorrow (today) and you will hear our appropriate response,” its  National Legal Adviser,   Mr. Kingsley Nnadi, told  one of our  correspondents in Abuja.

Chelsea fans outshine others on Facebook

Chelsea fans outshine others on Facebook

Of the top European football clubs, Chelsea FC is the most followed by Nigerians on Facebook.
According to statistics available on socialbakers.com, a Czech-based company that provides social media network statistics and analysis, Chelsea FC has about 634, 672 Nigerian Facebook fans, who keep up with its activities as well as engage the club and other supporters.
The figure represents about 3.5 per cent of its total fan base of over 17 million people on the social network. Also, Nigerians are the highest followers of  Chelsea FC in Africa on Facebook, beating the club’s supporters in Egypt,  Algeria, Ghana and Morocco to second, third, fourth and fifth positions respectively.
Indonesians are the highest number of people following the football club on the social network in the world, with over 2, 302, 994 fans representing 12.9 per cent of its total Facebook fans.
In second place is the 2012/2013 English Premier League winner, Manchester United, as it has about 615, 454 Nigerians subscribing to its updates on social network.
The figure accounts for 1.8 per cent of the Facebook followership of the football club based in Old Trafford, Greater Manchester.
Although London-based Arsenal FC has a total following of 14, 366, 883 people, only 504, 090 Nigerians are friends with it on Facebook.
In Africa, Egyptians are the biggest fans of the coach Arsène Wenger-managed club.
Spanish Giant, Barcelona FC, also has a sizable number of loyal fans in Nigeria. The Facebook page which is updated in Spanish and English boasts a following of over 43 million people on Facebook. However, only 328, 564 Nigerians have taken interest in their activities on the social networking site. Again, the biggest supporters of this club on the Facebook are Indonesians, Mexicans and Americans with four, three and two million fo0
llowers respectively.
Egyptians seem to love FC Barcelona, as the survey showed that over 1.25million citizens of the North African nation follow the club’s activities on Facebook. Residents of Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia also account for a substantial proportion of the clubs fan base in Africa.
On the 45-nation list of countries following Real Madrid Football Club of Spain, Nigeria occupies the 35th spot. Of the 39 million admirers that the club has on Facebook globally, only 267, 441 are Nigerians, representing less than one per cent of Real Madrids’ fan base.
Going by the statistics, Real Madrid commands a bigger Facebook following from citizens of Iraq, Jordan, Iran, Romania and Vietnam, than Nigeria.
Liverpool FC of England, whose local fans in Nigeria readily chant the club’s anthem, “You’ll Never Walk Alone” whenever their matches are been aired, has just 166, 343 Facebook fans who are Nigerians. The survey also reveals that over 28.7 per cent of  Liverpool FC fan base on Facebook are Asians.
Italian giant, AC Milan, which is arguably the most successful club in world football in terms of international trophies, has only 59,217 Nigerians subscribing to its ‘’behind-the-scenes’’ updates on Facebook.
In fact, Nigeria occupies the last position on the 45-nation list of countries following the club on the social network.
But AC Milan’s Facebook fans in Nigeria are more compared to that of Manchester City FC. MCFC has just 34,032 followers in the country.
The Lilywhites-Tottenham Hotspurs — known for its long-standing rivalry with neighbouring Arsenal — has the least fan base in the country with just 13,473 Nigerians following the club on Facebook.
Meanwhile, Real Madrids’ forward, Christiano Ronaldo, is the footballer with the highest number of followers on Facebook. He has to his credit over 59 million fans on the social network. He is closely followed by reigning world best footballer, Lionnel Messi, with 47 million followers. Messi’s team mate, Andres Iniesta, comes third with 13 million people followers on Facebook.

Police arrest woman over alleged abduction of five-year-old

Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Mr. Umar Manko
Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Mr. Umar Manko
Lagos State Police Command has arrested a woman, Basira Alabi, for abducting a five- year- old girl, identified simply as Divine.
It was learnt that Alabi, who was nabbed by the Okokomaiko Police Division, was neither a friend nor relative of Divine’s family. She was said to have abducted Divine from her school at Ijanikin during its end of session party on Friday.
A police source said Alabi and Divine had already boarded a commercial vehicle to Okokomaiko, before some co-passengers became suspicious of the woman.
The source said, “Alabi had used the end of session merriment at the girl’s school as a cover to lure the child away from the premises. They boarded a bus from Ijanikin to Okokomaiko before anyone suspected that something was amiss.
“While on the way to Okokomaiko, co-passengers were curious about the relationship between Alabi and Divine because there seemed to be no affection or familiarity between them.  The passengers questioned Alabi on who Divine was and she responded that Divine was her child.
“Perhaps, frightened by the attention that was being focused on them, Divine did not respond when she was questioned about Alabi.”
PUNCH Metro gathered that when the driver could no longer stand the unease in the bus, he pulled over at Okokomaiko and asked Alabi to disembark along with Divine.
It was learnt that when Alabi got down from the bus, the passengers noticed that Divine was being pulled by Alabi because the child was reluctant to go with her.
The passengers were said to have subsequently alerted the police.
The source said, “At the station, Alabi was asked her relationship with Divine. She explained that she was the mother but when she was asked Divine’s name, she could not say anything. The police then asked Divine her name and she said it.
“Divine was asked if she knew her mother’s number and when she was given a telephone, she dialed her mother’s number. That was how the real mother was told to come and pick up her child at Okokomaiko Police Station.”
PUNCH Metro learnt that the police were still working to unravel if Alabi was working alone or had accomplices.
The Lagos State Police Commissioner, Mr. Umaru Manko, confirmed the incident. He said, “Alabi was arrested at Okokomaiko last week when passengers in the commercial bus she boarded, raised the alarm that she was abducting Divine.”

PHCN apologises for power interruption in Ikeja

TheIkeja Electricity Distribution Company of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria has attributed the power supply interruptions in the Ikeja area of Lagos State to cable fault.

The Assistant General Manager, Public Affairs, Ikeja Disco, Mr. Pekun Adeyanju, in a statement on Wednesday, conveyed the  company’s management apologies to customers at Ikeja GRA, Opebi, General Hospital, Medical Road, Computer Village and environs over the ongoing load-shedding in their areas.

“The load-shedding is due to the underground cable fault between our transmission station at Maryland and our injection substation at Police Training College, Ikeja,” he said
“In order to avoid total blackout in those areas before we finish clearing the fault, the management has decided to backfeed the affected areas through Ogba Transmission Station,” Adeyanju added.

He, however, said the management of Ikeja Disco had decided to go on overhead construction for easy clearing of fault because of the illegal structures on the underground cables, which had not been allowing easy access to clearing of faults.
He said the new overhead construction work had commenced, adding that it would be commissioned in the next few days.

“We regret all inconveniences being experienced by the affected customers and we assure that power supply would soon be normalised,” he added.
It will be recalled that the Ikeja Business Unit of the PHCN had condemned the rising customer debt totalling N3.1bn in the area.

Speaking during a recent consultative council meeting held with its customers in Lagos, on Wednesday, the Manager, PHCN Ikeja Business Unit, Mr. Lateef Olaleye, regretted that customer debts to the company as at June, 2013 stood at N3.1bn.
While government Ministries, Department and Agencies in the business area owed PHCN N2.3bn, Olaleye said others owed N7m.

The waning influence of godfathers in Anambra

Obi and Jega
Obi and Jega
After consultations in Abuja last week, contenders for the Peoples Democratic Party ticket for the fourthcoming Anambra State governorship election stormed Akwa, the state capital.
Each had a mission to prepare for the party’s governorship primaries due to hold in two months.
Many of them were seen setting up campaign offices while several others were holding meetings with supporters at different locations.
A similar scenario is playing out in other political parties albeit at a lesser level. Contenders in political parties like the All Progressives Grand Alliance and the Action Congress of Nigeria are not as upbeat as their counterparts in the PDP because a faction of APGA and the Congress for Progressive Change are in the process of joining the All Progressives Congress.
An aspirant, Mr. Ifeanyi Uba, who decamped from APGA seems to have taken control of the Labour Party, while Dr. Igwebuike Hygers, is about the only aspirant in the CPC.
It is curious that not much has been heard from the camp of the Ubas of Uga in the run-up to the governorship election.
One of them, Senator Andy Uba, has signified his intention to run for the office of governor but his camp is calm when compared with others.
For about one and a half decades, the Ubas — Chris, Andy and Ugochukwu  — practically decided who occupied public offices in  Anambra State and at the federal or state level.
Chris, a  close friend of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, was so powerful that he claimed credit for nominating all the 30 members of the state House of Assembly, 11 members of the House of Representatives, the three senators, the governor and deputy governor during this period.
The three sons of the late Philip Uba, were barely known before 1999 when Nigeria returned to civil rule. With close ties to Obasanjo who later emerged as President, Anambra was literarily handed over to them.
While Andy held forth in Aso Rock as the Special Assistant to Obasanjo on Domestic Affairs, Chris dictated the tune in Awka as political godfather.
Their eldest brother, Ugochukwu, was appointed a commissioner in the cabinet of Governor  Chinwoke Mbadinuju, to protect the family’s interests.
The 2003 general elections marked the height of the Uba hegemony. Basking in the support the family enjoyed from the Presidency, Chris took charge of affairs in Awka. The other significant godfather, Emeka Offor, having been schemed out, concentrated on his business in Sao Tome and Principe.
Chris had an initial problem. He did not have control of the state machinery of the ruling PDP.
A peace settlement brokered by the former Senate President Dr. Chuba Okadigbo, in 2000 had given Mbadinuju the privilege of nominating the Chairman and Secretary of the party, whose loyalty remained with him.
To ensure that the Ubas controlled affairs, the Chief Audu Ogbeh-led National Working Committee of the PDP drew up a fresh list of delegates. This effectively handed over the party structure to Chris.
It was learnt that Senator Ibrahim Mantu, who conducted the primaries at the Women Development Centre, Awka, explained to Mbadinuju that although his protest against the turn of events had merit, he was constrained to rely on the list endorsed by the national chairman.
The primaries which followed produced Dr. Chris Ngige as the party’s flagbearer; he was before then a senatorial aspirant. Ngige was conscripted and sponsored by Chris.
Earlier, an opportunity was given to other PDP aspirants to step down for Ngige. Those who complied were rewarded with tickets to the Senate, House of Representatives or simply compensated with appointments.
Those who benefited from this arrangement included: Senator Ikechukwu Abana, who was imposed as the party’s candidate for Anambra Central, Senator Emma Anosike for Anambra North, Dr. Jerry Ugokwe, who was returned to the House of Representatives for Idemili Federal Constituency.
Others were: Mr. Chudi Offodile for Awka Federal constituency and Dr. Okey Odunze, who became a Special Adviser to Ngige after he was inaugurated as governor.
It is interesting to note that except for Ugochukwu, all the candidates imposed by Chris on the PDP won the 2003 elections.
They were however kicked out by the Election Petition Tribunal which cited irregularities in their nominations as reason for the verdict. Senator Joy Emodi replaced Anosike, while Senator Ben Obi replaced Abana as the authentic candidates for the PDP.
The revolt by Ngige a few months later and the events which followed in 2003 through 2004, dealt a huge blow to the political empire of the Ubas. They however remained influential in the state courtesy of the Obasanjo-led Federal Government.
However, a family feud over who among them should contest the 2007 governorship election signaled the beginning of their decline.
While Chris preferred Ugochukwu for the job, Andy wanted it for himself. Confident of federal support, Andy took the plunge and the family is yet to recover from the political consequence of this action. Ugochukwu lost his senatorial seat, Chris was incarcerated soon afterwards. He left to join the Democratic Peoples Party.
Andy won and was sworn-in as governor. Two weeks later, a judgment of the Supreme Court cut short his victory dance. The court ruled that Peter Obi’s tenure was still subsisting and as such, Andy’s election was a nullity.
By 2010 when another governorship election was due, the family had reunited but its influence had waned. This time, they supported Andy’s aspiration. When he failed to get PDP’s nomination, the family joined the Labour Party, but the gamble failed. Governor Obi was re-elected for a second term.
Consolation came for him in 2011 when he contested and won the election for Anambra South using the platform of a faction of the PDP led by Chris. Andy’s opponents are still in court contesting the results of that senatorial election. The petitioners argue that the faction of the PDP that gave him the ticket was not the authentic one.
The calm in the Uba camp may have been informed by experiences from previous governorship elections. Although they won in the field, they eventually lost nearly everything at the tribunal.
A little history would suffice at this point. The family did not really sponsor a governorship candidate in 1999.
In 2003, they sponsored Ngige, who was declared winner by INEC in controversial circumstances, but lost eventually at the tribunal to  Obi.
In 2007, when Andy contested and won the governorship election, INEC disqualified three major contestants – Obi, Ngige and Nicholas Ukachukwu.
Although he is in the Senate, Andy’s tenure is still being threatened by Ukachukwu’s suit which follows the same thread as that of Senator Margery Okadigbo. Okadigbo’s suit overturned that of John Emeka who contested on the same factional lineup as Andy.
There are several odds stacked against the Ubas in the coming governorship election. Apart from the sentiments about their sordid past in the politics of the state, there are move by powerful elements in the state that insist that the governorship seat should move to Anambra North senatorial zone. This zone has not produced a governor for the state since it was created in 1991.
The Ubas, who hail from Uga, the Aguata Local Government Area, are from Anambra South Senatorial Zone, which has produced Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife and Dr. Chinwoke Mbadinuju as governors.
One of the proponents of this power shift to Anambra North is Obi whose capacity to influence things in the state is no longer in doubt.
Besides, there is growing unity among the people of Anambra North. They have increased the tempo of their campaign to get the other zones to support their claim to the governorship.
With the void being created by the absence of the Ubas in the political arena, observers predict that the outcome of the November 16 governorship election will be critical in determining the new power broker(s) in the state.
Already, Obi and Chief Arthur Eze are names that have been mentioned as being those that will define the political destiny of the state in the next four years.
Meanwhile, the clan of aspirants for the governorship poll has continued to increase. Some of them are: Dr. Alex Obiogbolu, Mr. Chijioke Ndubuisi, Mr. Ifeanyi Ubah, and Mr. Akachukwu Nwakpo.
Others are: Dr. Chike Obidigbo, Mr. Chinedu Idigo, Mr. Oseloka Obaze, Mr. Mike Okoye, Mr. Paul Odenigbo, Mr. Patrick Obianwu, Mrs. Uche Ekwunife, Ngige and Mr. Godwin Ezeemo. Whether the decline in the political fortunes of Anambra’s once powerful family is a temporal setback or a permanent one, only time will tell.
