Travellers in the north of England have been handed a boost after Thomas Cook Airlines announced two new routes from Manchester to Los Angeles and Boston.
The airline, Manchester’s biggest long-haul carrier, will launch the
services in May 2016. Both will operate twice a week using its Airbus
A330 aircraft. Tickets go on sale this week, with returns starting at
£299 for Boston and £399 for Los Angeles.
The move will see Manchester become the only UK city outside of London
with direct flights to both US cities. It will make trips to both
destinations a much easier proposition for travellers in the north of
England, who currently must fly indirect via London, another US city
such as New York, or a European hub such as Paris or Amsterdam.
Los Angeles will appeal to art and film lovers, as well as those hoping
to explore the rest of California. Lucie Young, our Los Angeles expert,
describes it as “one of the world’s most creative cities”.

“Its museums and burgeoning gallery scene have an experimental edge
that is often missing in other cultural capitals,” she adds. “It boasts
many of the country’s most exciting chefs and has a lively fashion and
design community that creates innovative architecture, clothing and
graphics.
“And as if that wasn’t incentive enough to visit, Los Angeles is the perfect city to intersperse relaxing escapes into nature with metropolitan pleasures. The city has many beautiful semi-wild parks and there is also the 22-mile long South Bay bike path that runs from Will Rogers State Beach in the north to Playa Del Rey in the south. And half a day’s drive from the city you can experience great skiing at Big Bear, the vineyards of the Santa Ynez Valley near Santa Barbara or hike in the High Mojave desert near Palm Springs.”

Boston is likely to attract those hoping to explore New England’s famed fall foliage or the Cape Cod coast. Kathy Arnold, our Boston expert, says that the city has “something for everyone”. ”Founded in 1630, this old lady is not stuck in the past,” she adds.
“Georgian-style houses are balanced by soaring glass and steel skyscrapers and venerable museums by edgy contemporary galleries. As in European cities, half the fun is exploring the different neighbourhoods: posh Beacon Hill, the Italian North End and Back Bay, with its shops and cafés.”

Thomas Cook also plans to increase the frequency of its other transatlantic services from Manchester. From next year it will raise the number of flights to both Las Vegas and New York to six a week, while Orlando will be served daily during 2016’s peak summer period.

“Manchester Airport has a very strong relationship with Thomas Cook Airlines, and the expansion confirms the airport as the UKs global gateway from the North,” said Ken O’Toole, managing director of Manchester Airport. “With over 22m people living within our two-hour catchment, two full length runways and all-time record passenger numbers, Manchester Airport is, and will continue to have, the available capacity and demand to meet the needs of our catchment that extends as far north as Scotland and south to the Midlands.”
